Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated HR Manager Japan to oversee all HR activities for our ~200 employees in Japan with offices in Tokyo and a plant in Onahama. The role will act as the HR manager for the Japanese business, covering corporate, commercial, plant, and R&D/lab functions. The incumbent will ensure compliance with Japanese labor law, manage labor relations, support leadership and employees, and deliver effective HR programs aligned with the company’s strategy. A key priority for the first 18 months will be rolling out a new HR operating model in Japan incl. new global HRIS, local systems and external partners (e.g. for payroll).

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

1. Country HR Leadership (Japan):

  • Serve as the primary HR contact for all employees and leaders in Japan.
  • Oversee all HR processes including employee relations, recruitment, performance management, compensation & benefits, and workforce planning.
  • Ensure compliance with Japanese labor laws and regulations.
  • Partner with management and employee representatives on labor relations and negotiations.

 

2. HR Operations & Vendor Management:

  • Manage HR vendors and service providers (payroll, benefits, recruitment agencies, etc.).
  • Oversee HR administration and ensure accurate HR and payroll data.

 

3. Talent & Culture:

  • Partner with local leaders to drive talent acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Implement global HR policies locally, while tailoring them to Japanese requirements where necessary.
  • Drive employee engagement initiatives to build a strong and inclusive culture.

 

4. Transformation & Change:

  • Support HR integration and transformation efforts linked to post-merger integration and the standalone setup of the business.
  • Act as a change agent, helping leaders and employees navigate organizational changes effectively.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience in Japan, ideally in international or matrix organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of Japanese labor laws, labor relations, and compliance.
  • Experience working with works councils/unions is an advantage.
  • Business fluency in Japanese and English (both written and spoken).
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
