  • Joan Haab, Site Head Viral & Gene Therapy

    Joan holds a Bachelor's Degree in Cellular & Molecular Biology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience. She has 20 years of professional executive experience in the medical device and biotechnology industries. As the site head for the Carlsbad Viral Vector Manufacturing facility, Joan is excited to work with a phenomenal team that is driving new technology forward, supporting customers and impacting patient lives every day.

  • Lisa Freeman-Cook, PhD Head of Technical Operations

    Lisa holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and she completed a post-doc in Virology at Yale University.  Lisa leads the Technical Operations function at the Viral Vector Manufacturing facility.  Lisa is developing dedicated and high performing teams within the Technical Operations group, with a focus on employee development and engagement.

  • Heather Burnell, Head of Quality

    Heather has a BS in Environmental & Systematic Biology from California State Polytechnic University and 28 years of experience in Biologics, Quality Assurance and Control. Most recently she worked as a Quality consultant for Alava Biopharma partners. Prior, she headed Quality at Immunocellular Therapeutics and spent 22 years at Amgen in a broad range of QC & QA roles of increasing responsibility including both Site and Global leadership roles.

  • Marc Gaal, Head of Program Management

    Marc is Head of the Virus and Gene Therapy PMO for the promise venture, Gene Editing and Novel Modalities (GENM). Based in Carlsbad, he leads a team of R&D and Manufacturing Project Managers, in three locations within the US. Marc has been with the company going on 25 years. In that time he has held management positions in four different disciplines; Manufacturing, Process Development, Project Management and Contract Management.

    The Curiosity Cube®, a retrofitted shipping container turned mobile science lab, travels North America bringing hands-on science to visitors. Equipped with the latest technology, the Curiosity Cube's goal is to spark curiosity within the future generation of scientists.

    Each year Carlsbad employees volunteer at local schools and events to support the Curiosity Cube, promote STEM and encourage students to get excited about science!
