Senior Scientist - Cultured Meat

Your Role:
At MilliporeSigma, the Senior Scientist will develop cell culture media formulations for the expansion and differentiation of cells for the emerging cultured meat industry.  Working closely with data scientists and process engineers, this position will be responsible for designing and leading development projects for various food-relevant species by leveraging high-throughput platforms.  Additionally, identifying and testing novel food-grade raw materials that drive bioprocess efficiency and sustainability will be integral to this role.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a broad group of technical and non-technical personnel, including both internal and external partners.  This position will be based in the Boston area.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and optimize cell culture media and feed formulations that meet performance and quality expectations of product development and customer-driven projects
  • Establish a suite of cultured meat relevant characterization methods for a range of cell types and species
  • Investigate novel, food-grade sources of media micronutrients and link culture performance to raw material quality attributes
  • Champion efforts to bridge virtual and lab experiments by embracing techniques such as computational modeling, machine learning and AI      
  • Stay informed of scientific advancements in the fields of cultured meat, cellular metabolism and tissue engineering to expand the team’s capabilities and expertise
  • Communicate progress to a range of audiences

 

 

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Cell Biology or related Science discipline with 5+ years industrial experience – OR –
  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology or related Science discipline with 2+ years relevant industrial experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Metabolomics or related field with 5+ years relevant industrial experience
  • Strong background in cell culture media development and understanding of metabolic pathways
  • Background in cell culture techniques and demonstrated experience and knowledge of a variety of cell types, including stem cells and/or primary cells
  • Strong statistical analysis, familiarity with design of experiment (DoE) approaches, and experimental design skills
  • Familiarity with bioreactor systems and process development
  • Solid experience and theoretical knowledge of different analysis techniques including microscopy, flow cytometry analysis, immunoassays, ELISA and qPCR
  • Demonstrated ability to scope and manage projects, to accomplish objectives with short deadlines
  • Meticulous scientific approach, flexibility, and creativity
