Your role:  

At EMD Serono in Billerica, MA, our global Computational Chemistry and Biologics group is seeking a data scientist for biologics (NBEs) to develop predictive and generative models for biologics design, computational characterization, and optimization. These predictive models will be used to advance our innovative and dynamic preclinical portfolio. 


The Sr. Scientist will join a global team of highly motivated, cross-disciplinary scientists. You will collaborate and work with leading academic research groups in the field of machine and deep learning. In this role you will support biologics discovery working closely with wet-lab biologists and chemists, and software developers within Discovery & Development Technologies in on-going drug discovery projects thereby driving our efforts to identify and optimize innovative oncology and immunology drugs.


  • Develop and implement machine-learning and deep-learning based predictive models to characterize NBEs
  • Develop and drive development of our web-based biologics modelling platform
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues from antibody technology, biology, chemistry, and research informatics to shape next-generation antibody design tools
  • Leverage protein sequence and structural information to predict and optimize biophysical properties of biologics
  • Contribute to external collaborations and partnerships


Who you are: 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or related discipline
  • 2+ years’ experience with programming skills in languages like Python or R
  • 2+ years’ experience in computational methods with an emphasis on design and optimization of biologics sequences and properties


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 2+ years of drug discovery experience in academia or pharmaceutical/biotech industry
  • 2+ years’ experience in scientific software development
  • 1+ years’ experience with machine-learning and deep-learning libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch
  • Experience in analyzing protein sequences and applying structural biology methods for design and optimization of biologics (protein homology modeling and simulation, affinity prediction, prediction of biophysical biologics properties)
  • Experience with antibody, nanobody or large molecules screening and production technologies
  • Good understanding of laboratory techniques in molecular biology, biophysical and cellular assays and Next-generation sequencing, protein expression and purification
  • Evidence of creative application of computational approaches to problems of pharmaceutical interest.
  • Track record of publications and presentations.
  • Sound understanding of database handling and web applications
  • Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams
  • Curious mindset with a can-do mentality
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills
