Head of Global Business Development, Life Science

Your Role: The Head of Business Development is an integral part of the holistic organic and inorganic strategy development and execution process in Life Science (LS) including, Acquisitions, Partnerships and divestitures.  The role will comprise both, driving bolt-on M&A and partnership deals as well as evaluating and assessing potential transformative M&A deals on an ongoing basis. Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee globally the LS deal making process from
    • Scouting, funneling a pipeline of opportunities, and business case development to prioritization and selection of targets
    • working in close collaboration with Group M&A on deal negotiation and execution
    • Drive value realization and organizational readiness across deal continuum including post-merger integration   
  • Closely collaborate with the Business and the Business Units Business Development (BD) teams, the Strategy teams and Group M&A to prioritize, execute, and realize deal value
  • Oversees governance of Deal Review Committee to facilitate decision making with LS CEO and Life Science Executive Team (LSET) - including regular review of deal integration status for closed deals
  • Continue to evolve our BD Process and become the recognized and value adding BD Center of Expertise for Life Science, both internally (LS and Group) and externally, including but not limited to best practices in deal approaches for Life Sciences  and financial evaluation of business cases
  • Define and Partner with Executive Vice President Global Strategy and BD in developing and finalizing the LS deal plan that will be directly delivered by this position to the Merck Executive Board and CEO of the LS Business.
  • Lead and coordinate stakeholder involvement to build and define the business cases in close collaboration with business leaders to finally ensure buy-in and approval by MilliporeSigma President & CEO and ultimately the Merck Executive Board
  • Deliver on ensuring our company image in the industry facilitates deal making – develop and maintain a strong and high-quality external network in the LS industry, represent the company at key global events (like  JP Morgan )

 

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Executive with min 10+ years overall professional experience in the science and technology sector, with a strong preference for Life Science Industry experience
  • Masters or bachelor’s degree in Business or Science or comparable experience in a science driven environment
  • 5+ years hands on, extensive experience in business development globally across the deal value chain
  • Proven track record of closing numerous (complex) deals, minimum 3+ deals
  • Deep knowledge of (and solid network in) the life science Industry, understanding of the player landscape.
  • Ability to understand and assess new trends, technologies, modalities, tools based on a good understanding of and a genuine interest in the underlying science paired with sound business and financial judgment. Ability to bring these skills together to formulate strong and convincing business cases.
  • Strong influential leadership skills and personal gravitas needed in a global BD environment, strong collaborator across all levels of the organization, strong active listening skills
  • Ability to succeed, convince and get buy-in in a fast-paced and globally matrixed business environment, cultural sensitivity and adaptability.   
  • Ability to resolve challenging global problems hands-on and facilitate settlements worldwide
  • Ability to set global priorities and process multiple internal and external customer demands
  • Demonstrated expertise in the building, growing and servicing of a global business
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to explain complex concepts to senior management
  • Excellent English (Written, Oral, Negotiations)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Combination of Science and Business Education a plus, PhD a plus
