Engineering & Maintenance Manager

Your Role:

Reporting to the Site Head, the primary role of the Engineering and Maintenance Manager is to lead a team which oversees engineering, equipment and facility maintenance, outside contractors, site security, and environmental health & safety (EHS) to support operations for the Burlington site.  This team maintains, sustains, and improves ongoing operations, and develops, procures, and commissions equipment and associated processes to support new product introduction needs, while supporting and enabling a safe working environment. 

 

The focus of the role is on ensuring manufacturing equipment and processes, facilities/utility equipment, and equipment maintenance are operating as intended to meet the requirements for membrane manufacturing operations.  In addition to maintaining tactical support of ongoing operations and resolving operational problems, responsibilities include strategic hiring, equipment and process design and procurement, CAPEX planning, and implementation of engineering projects to meet the changing needs of the business.

 

This is a key role working within the site leadership team to identify and prioritize facility, process, and equipment improvements and ensure changes to and installation of new processes and equipment are managed within the guidelines of the site quality management system. 

 

The Engineering and Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading the development of department staff and expertise through mentoring, coaching, training, hiring, and performance management to ensure the team is able to meet all departmental needs.

Main Job Responsibilities:

  • Departmental leadership
    • Lead development of department staff and expertise to meet needs
      • Mentoring, coaching, training, hiring, and performance management
      • Manage resources internally/externally as needed
    • Develop the annual engineering project plan, maintenance plan, budget, and CAPEX
      • Communicate plan to relevant organizational leadership and manage the plan according to established budgets and timelines.
    • Lead cross-functional project teams involved in process design, equipment design, and building renovation
      • Influence cross-functional members in the face of competing priorities
    • Provide project management support to ensure projects are completed on time, per specifications and within budget
    • Drive a culture of safety and compliance and support investigations into near misses, incidents, and system failures

 

  • Support of on-going production operations
    • Trend analysis and reporting of manufacturing process performance
    • Provide engineering support for production failures
      • Strategically identifies solutions to production challenges and develop projects to increase efficiencies
    • Analyze manufacturing and facilities equipment performance to identify areas for improvement
      • Identify and implement continuous improvement ideas that reduce costs, increase equipment efficiency and effectiveness
    • Implementation of change controls, investigation and closure of NCRs/CAPAs, and development/improvement of SOPs

 

  • Manufacturing process design and qualification:
    • Guide the design and execution of process experiments at bench, pilot, and full-scale manufacturing to support development activities
    • Technology transfer of new membrane processes from R&D into larger-scale manufacturing
    • Design and execution of process qualification and validation studies, including pFMEA and risk assessment documentation, IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, and SOP development
    • Provide input to and leadership of process safety analyses and risk assessments for new processes

 

  • Equipment & facility design
    • Manage design, procurement, installation, and qualification of process and facilities-related equipment for clean room membrane manufacturing, including any related building renovation
      • URS generation, equipment design and selection, capital expense process, cost and schedule development, project reporting, construction oversight, construction safety, procurement, commissioning & validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and SOP development
    • Ensure all system and equipment documentation is completed within company guidelines
      • URS, FAT/SAT, IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, pFMEA and risk assessment documentation, P&IDs, CAD drawings, SOPs
  • Maintenance and facilities
    • Responsible for process equipment, facilities systems and plant ownership including maintenance and repair activities
      • Development of preventive maintenance plans and training programs for process and facilities equipment
      • Identify and implement maintenance and safety improvements
    • Negotiate and coordinate contracts and service with outside vendors
    • Provide coordination support to ensure maintenance is completed on time and without significant production impact or plant down time.
    • Responsible for site security according to company guidelines
    • Act as the point of contact for MilliporeSigma with building landlord(s) and local and provincial regulatory agencies.

 

  • Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)
    • Responsible for site EHS programs
      • Ensure programs meet provincial and company guidelines
    • Identify and implement and safety improvements
    • Manage site environmental certificate for emissions & waste disposal
    • Reporting and analysis of key EHS statistics

 

 

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree, MS degree, or PHD (Degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar)
  • 10+ years of work experience in equipment engineering, process engineering or related fields, ideally in Life Science or the medical device industry, with demonstrated abilities in one or more of the following areas:
    • Chemical process and/or mechanical system design
    • Roll goods / web-based manufacturing
    • Materials science and polymer chemistry
  • 5+ years managing and leading technical teams
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to travel international several times per year
  • Ability to translate and communicate detailed data analysis to all levels of the organization and staff with varying levels of knowledge and experience
  • Experience with equipment and process validation process (URS, FAT/SAT, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Effective ability in creating, editing and reviewing drawings & schematics, including Process Flow Diagrams and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  • In-depth knowledge of all maintenance functions (e.g. staffing, preventive maintenance, calibration, etc.) and building facilities and systems (HEPA filtered HVAC, high-purity water systems, building management systems, etc.)
  • Experience with project and construction management.
  • Experience in ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems
  • Knowledge of OHSA and 3+ years of experience in EHS\

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM programs (Autodesk products, SolidWorks)
  • Experience with control systems (PLC, DCS, Loop controllers)
  • Agility to find optimal engineering solutions to challenging problems in equipment design
  • Strong analytical skills and the flexibility to perform varied tasks with consistent high quality
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to efficiently coordinate and communicate with internal as well as external partners and present results to team members and supervisors
  • Ability to self-direct toward individual milestones as part of team projects with a strong sense of responsibility, urgency, and high energy with a positive behavior
  • Business-fluent English skills
