Senior Equipment Engineer

Your Role:

Continuous improvements to facilities and process equipment or introduction of new technologies are required to maintain and improve product performance, process robustness, yield and security of supply to our customers, while ensuring new products can be introduced to the market.  These improvements must be thorough, reproduceable, sustainable, and effective.


The engineering team is responsible for working with Operations, R&D, and Quality to identify, lead and execute these changes in order to deliver long term, robust manufacturing processes for new and existing products. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the role of the Senior Equipment Engineer is to identify and implement equipment improvement ideas that reduce costs, increase equipment efficiency and effectiveness, and improve process yield and to develop new equipment designs to meet the requirements for production of novel products.


The role requires technical creativity and strong initiative and follow-through in executing project responsibilities, overcoming obstacles, and balancing multiple priorities effectively.  You will interface with maintenance, process development, and R&D to identify opportunities, define requirements, and develop concepts for new or improved facilities and process equipment.  You will communicate to colleagues, stakeholders and sponsors though written reports and oral presentations.  You must be able to lead multiple complex projects that may require technology development, an ability to guide teams, and engage with external collaborators.  The ideal candidate will:

  • Manage design, procurement, installation, and qualification of process and facilities-related equipment for clean room membrane manufacturing;
    • Liase with R&D and process development to ensure information required to inform equipment/process design is incorporated into development work;
    • Develop the schedule and required resources for completion of equipment improvement/replacement/development projects;
    • Assess the projected cost of the improvement efforts and development and manage the budget for these efforts;
    • Management overall equipment implementation plan.  This includes driving team to meet objectives, schedule and budget;
    • Provide guidance for the safe installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of facilities and process equipment
  • Analyze manufacturing and facilities equipment performance to identify areas for improvement;
    • Identify and implement continuous improvement ideas that reduce costs, increase equipment efficiency and effectiveness;
    • Drive change controls with documentation, justification, and impact assessments
  • Ensure projects are executed in a manner that meets quality and customer expectations
    • Manage communication with external vendors selected for equipment projects
    • Communicate status, risks and progress of qualification efforts to senior management and key stakeholders.
    • Demonstrate technical problem-solving skills related to complex project execution and site equipment / systems troubleshooting challenges
  • Develop and write equipment documentation (i.e. VMP, URS, FAT, Equipment IQ/OQ/PQ, DOE, and SOPs) for appropriate equipment and systems within the guidelines of internal policies and procedures
    • Review executed protocols and review / write final reports
    • Perform equipment IQ/OQ/PQ and provide troubleshooting support on equipment as required
    • Evaluate and improve the overall process governing qualification of equipment and systems
  • Work closely with operations to develop, coordinate, and implement technical training plans for individuals involved with the operation and maintenance of equipment introduced to the operations team
  • Provide engineering support in operations & facilities to troubleshoot and resolve technical mechanical and electrical issues
  • Take part in and contribute to a safe working environment by following corporate and departmental safety regulations
  • Perform all other duties as assigned


Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree or MS degree, or PHD (Degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar)
  • 5-10 years of work experience in equipment engineering, process engineering or related fields, ideally in Life Science or the medical device industry, with demonstrated abilities in one or more of the following areas:
    • Chemical process and/or mechanical system design
    • Roll goods / web-based manufacturing
    • Materials science and polymer chemistry
  • Ability to travel to the USA or Europe several times per year
  • Experience with equipment validation process (URS, FAT/SAT, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Effective ability in creating, editing and reviewing Process Flow Diagrams and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  • Experience in ISO 9001 or similar QMS


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management and coordination experience associated with the execution of capital projects
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM programs (Autodesk products, SolidWorks)
  • Experience with control systems (PLC, DCS, Loop controllers)
  • Agility to find optimal engineering solutions to challenging problems in equipment design
  • Strong analytical skills and the flexibility to perform varied tasks with consistent high quality
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to efficiently coordinate and communicate with internal as well as external partners and present results to team members and supervisors
  • Ability to self-direct toward individual milestones as part of team projects with a strong sense of responsibility, urgency, and high energy with a positive behavior
  • Business-fluent English skills
