Your Role

This position is within the Thin Film Solutions Organization’s Organosilane R&D Group located in Carlsbad, California.  The primary function of this position will involve developing the synthesis and purification of novel organosilane thin-film deposition (ALD/CVD) precursors for the semiconductor electronics industry. Specific Responsibilities Include:

 

  • Maintain a strong commitment to personal and environmental safety
  • Design, install, and operate synthetic chemistry and purification equipment
  • Synthesize, analyze, and optimize small-scale production of novel organosilanes
  • Propose new molecules and reaction pathways in order to solve technically challenging problems associated with developing new thin film deposition applications
  • Maintain detailed experimental digital notebooks and present experimental findings
  • Develop intellectual property related to novel organosilane products and production methods
  • Collaborate with local and global technology, engineering, safety, application, analytical, and business teams to support new product introduction

 

Physical requirements:

  • Wearing applicable laboratory PPE and occasionally an air-purifying respirator
  • Conducting routine equipment and glassware setup, cleaning, and maintenance, as well as performing synthetic tasks within a fume hood
  • Operating within a glovebox to handle air-sensitive chemicals including weighing out, pouring, pipetting, assembling apparatus, filtration, and performing other tasks required for preparing and processing chemical mixtures and reactions under an inert atmosphere
  • Lifting up to 30 pounds

 

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other life science disciplines

 

  • 2+ years of hands-on lab experience synthesizing and handling air-sensitive materials with glass/metal manifolds and inert atmosphere gloveboxes

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience with the synthesis and purification of molecular organosilanes, including working with Schlenk-lines, vacuum-lines, liquid nitrogen traps, gloveboxes, and standard lab glassware
  • Hands-on experience with analytical methods, including gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and spectroscopies (IR, Raman, multi-NMR), including data interpretation
  • Strong mechanical skills relevant to the installation, operation, and maintenance of inert vacuum manifold and reactor systems
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with process instrumentation equipment used for continuous data logging and simple process controls (flow controllers, temperature controllers, transducers, thermocouples, actuated valves, etc.)
  • Experience performing hazard reviews and writing detailed procedures
  • Proficient in reading, interpreting, and creating process instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Proficient user of the MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
  • Computer programming and/or data analytics skills would be an asset
  • Familiarity with hazard analysis methodologies such as ‘what if’ and HAZOP
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate and motivate
  • Proficient communication skills (verbal and written)

 

$89,600-$134,400
