Scientist: Application and Optics (Metrology)

We are seeking a talented scientist who has a passion for developing novel optical films and components for AR/VR devices. Working with a team of experts, your role will be to develop state-of-the-art measuring techniques for accurately measuring the performance of the films and components. The ability to clearly communicate complex topics to technical experts and to work well with other interfaces e.g. marketing is essential to the role.


In this role you will use your knowledge of optical component manufacturing processes and experience in optical measurement techniques to meet customer target specifications. A hands-on engineering approach is required for developing improved optical component testing systems. This role requires the ability to develop a project strategy, implement & communicate, give direction to the project team, coordinate resources and ensure planned work is carried out according to project deadlines. You will be encouraged to innovate outside your immediate area of responsibility and to develop a network within the wider Merck scientific community.

Merck’s wide technology base gives successful candidates the chance to make a difference in a number of exciting ways.  Additional responsibilities include handling customer interactions, developing IP portfolio and maintaining comprehensive project documentation and roadmaps.   


Who you are:


  • Degree or PhD in Chemistry or Physics  
  • Has a deep knowledge in technical optics  
  • Experience in optical measurement technique
  • Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in a team environment 
  • Experience of using optical simulation software  
  • Knowledge of LCD and other display technology  
  • Understanding of laser compliance and product safety standards 
  • Responsible for development and testing of optical components and systems from concept to launch  
  • Ensure feasibility of new optical systems regarding quality, producibility and reliability  
  • Ability to explore a range of potential technologies and work with partners on proof of concept development 
  • Excellent communicator, presenter and organizer
