Position Summary

The SVP & Head Global Market Access and Pricing (GMAP) will act with the highest level of integrity to lead a best-in-class organization that develops and executes successful market access and pricing strategies that are tailored to the priority markets, works proactively with the in-country Market Access Leads to document and communicate the value of the Merck portfolio to Payers and Health Technology Assessment Organizations, and develops innovative access, pricing and contracting solutions that ensure patient access to Merck therapies.


This leader will identify, develop, prioritize, and execute initiatives that will accelerate growth of short-and long-term performance for pipeline, launch and inline assets. This includes driving the organization to achieve and hold competitive superiority through a compelling access vision and strategy, sharing of best practices, and building access capabilities and excellence in execution.

The successful candidate will be familiar with the access and reimbursement environment and trends in the  U.S., EU 5, China,  and Japan, while possessing a deep understanding of the evolving access requirements across multiple disease areas, including Oncology,  Immunology, and Neurology. The candidate must also be well versed in global pricing systems, health policy, and health economics and evidence generation, and should have the ability to integrate these disciplines and thereby formulate future access strategies and lead a cross-functional team to

effectively execute on these strategies.

The successful candidate will be capable of shaping the external market access and policy environment. They will represent Merck interests with important external stakeholders as appropriate, e.g., government and regulatory officials, health authorities, payers, industry associations, media, key opinion leaders, physicians, patients, and advocates.


The successful candidate will be capable of integrating the matrix through vertical and horizontal alignment and creating a unified and seamless cross-functional leadership team that works together to achieve organizational objectives. S/he will build personal credibility and strong working relationships, breaking barriers and having influence across organizational and geographical boundaries leading to efficiency, effectiveness, and agility for optimized organizational performance. S/he will ensure aligned prioritization and proper staffing, support, and resources are in place to achieve optimal results and will establish and work within appropriate governance models. The Head of GMAP will create an environment that fosters accountability, innovation, learning, knowledge sharing, and constructive disagreement and makes decisions with appropriate balance of alignment, risk, speed, and rigor.

 

Key Responsibilities
 

Lead the team to:

  • Develop access and pricing strategies for the Merck portfolio and enable and support key market execution
  • Create global pricing strategies that ensure value recognition and support the company’s financial ambition; manage all pricing governance, compliance, and data strategy
  • Ensure that MAP is integrated into relevant commercial, strategic planning, R&D, and BD workstreams
  • Work with and leverage the cross-functional expertise of their team, Health Policy, HEOR, Commercial, Medical R&D, to ensure relevant insights obtained to formulate market access and pricing strategies
  • Utilize insights from an integrated understanding of the business and local market environment and trends to develop customized strategies that maximize access and reimbursement opportunity and minimize risk exposure
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to optimize clinical trial designs for patient access, reimbursement, and value recognition, ensuring early and systematic payer insight integration
  • Determine launch and indication sequence optimization for pipeline and launch assets
  • Develop objectives and metrics for access success and measure and assess progress towards agreed upon market access and launch objectives and metrics, and where appropriate adjust such strategies to ensure year end success
  • Ensure that HEOR, Medical, Policy, and Advocacy strategies are aligned to and support the realization of access strategy
  • Enhance local-global collaboration and improve local team capabilities in key areas (e.g., value communication, negotiation, innovative contracting)
  • Monitor external environment and synthesize input to advise Leadership and other critical cross-functional leaders on key access policies and practices affecting objectives, quantify risks and opportunities, and make recommendations for action.
  • Effectively navigate the matrix to develop and strengthen collaboration with other functional areas and market access colleagues to drive alignment, consistency where appropriate, best practice sharing, and flawless implementation of all market access activities
  • Lead a direct team of nine reports and ~35 indirect reports

Qualifications & Experience
 

  • Deep understanding of the biopharmaceuticals industry in oncology and specialty therapeutics; commercial and access leadership experience in the U.S. or International
  • Deep understanding of the broad array of value, access, pricing, payment and HEOR skills and experience across U.S., International and other markets, and the demonstrated ability to utilize this knowledge to formulate and execute robust and successful access strategies in these markets
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate risk and build contingencies to maximize opportunities and to help mitigate negative impacts
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience with a strong track record in Market Access, Pricing, Value and Access Marketing, and HEOR
  • Demonstrated ability to drive value perception and work effectively with Government Authorities
  • Demonstrated track record of leading and managing high performing, cross-functional teams, or complex organizations successfully
  • Knowledge of the Product Development and Commercialization Process
  • Significant launch / commercialization experience desired
  • Demonstration of all Core Merck Values
  • Undergraduate degree required, MBA and/or post graduate degree preferred
