Manager, US Medical Publications

Your Role:

The Manager, US Medical Publications, is responsible for leading the development and execution of strategic Medical Publication plans across assigned therapeutic areas (TAs). As part of the role, he/she is responsible for all aspects of publication planning while working closely with the Medical Communications, Medical Operations and Congress Planning leads.


The successful candidate will also be responsible for interacting with various investigators, HCPs, vendors and internal EMD Serono departments to lead publications planning and management for the assigned TAs while ensuring compliance and good publication practices and scientific merit of medical publications.


  • Manages the preparation and maintenance of rolling 12-month strategic publication plans in alignment with product development teams
  • Works closely with Medical Affairs and Cross-functional groups (Scientific Communications, Medical Information, Field Medical, Marketing, etc.) to ensure highly impactful publication plan and strategy
  • Drives continuous progress in publishing scientific results by preparing for, leading and following-up on action items from regular publication team meetings for assigned projects
  • Coordinates medical writing and external vendor activity to ensure timely delivery and submission of publications
  • Works with internal and external authors to support the planning of abstracts, posters, presentations, original manuscripts and review papers
  • Ensures consistent adherence to established EMD Serono publication policy and processes 
  • Serves as Medical Publication point of contact with internal and external collaborators for all congress activities
  • Oversees relevant vendor selection, management and ongoing analysis of performance 
  • Performs any other activity as may reasonably be required from time to time
  • Ensures all US medical publications are accurate, fair, balanced, non-misleading and written with the utmost scientific integrity.
  • Understands and applies the current status of industry standards and practice and ensures activities are in compliance with GPP, ensuring both internal and external interactions comply with these standards.
  • Manages progress and drives the preparation, review, approval, and submission to congress/journals of scientific publications
  • Prepares, reviews, revises and edits a variety of scientific documents (e.g. abstracts, posters, papers, review articles, oral presentations, etc.) for external publication for assigned projects, when necessary
  • Prepares for, leads & follows up on actions from regular publication team meetings for assigned projects to drive progress forward in publishing scientific results
  • Manages relationships with external authors in the preparation and review of manuscripts for publication for assigned projects
  • Leads cross-functional teams as assigned
  • Maintains awareness of current publication status by tracking progress of manuscripts from inception to publication for assigned projects
  • Completes all of the above activities within the framework and in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and other systems in force within EMD Serono policies
  • Performs any other activity as may reasonably be required from time to time
  • Provides leadership to outsourced vendors to ensure that the execution of medical communications and publications plans are consistent with corporate and department objectives, and within budget.
  • Forecasts and secures resources (financial and personnel) – with business case preparation, as appropriate.


Who you are:

  • Advanced scientific degree (Ph.D., PharmD, MD) strongly preferred (Masters degree or other scientific or clinical degrees considered) with pharmaceutical industry or medical communications agency experience (required).
  • Scientific and/or clinical experience within Neurology (multiple sclerosis) and/or Oncology strongly preferred
  • 8-10 years of prior experience working within biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or related fields or jobs with a relevant medical/scientific focus
  • 4-7 years of demonstrated managerial skills in matrix reporting structures, including management of medical communications agencies




  • Normal and routine office duties.
  • Position requires both domestic and international travel up to 20-30% of time depending on business needs.
