Your Role:
At MilliporeSigma, as a Bioinformatician 2 - Hybrid/Rockville, within our Research & Development Department at the Rockville Maryland facility, your role is to design, optimize, develop and implement a range of bioinformatics/data analysis applications tailored to the full range of genomics service offerings. These services broadly span the product biosafety and pharmacogenomics fields.
Scope of Responsibility:
Your primary responsibilities will include developing bioinformatics algorithms and machine learning models, as well as performing computational data analysis to support a variety of multi-omics testing services (e.g., metagenomics, RNA-seq, proteomics). You will liaise closely with management, end users (e.g., Scientists/Study Management), support staff and internal teams as required to understand needs and requirements. You will serve as a technical lead on projects as assigned, troubleshoot analysis issues and/or bioinformatics problems, and work collaboratively to advance the application of Next Generation Sequencing in the field of biosafety testing.
Essential Job Functions
- Serve as the technical lead for bioinformatics algorithm and machine learning model development, as well as data analysis
- Initiate, direct, and execute algorithm development strategies to support a panel of omics-based service offerings
- Communicate timelines, bioinformatics, and related needs as well as bottlenecks to management and assist scientists with analysis needs, as applicable
- Develop custom scripts (e.g., Python, R, Shell) for process improvement, automation, and data analysis
- Troubleshoot analysis and algorithm design; assist team with solving bioinformatics challenges. Identify and solve complex workflow problems; and improve/optimize existing pipelines as required
- Maintain complete and comprehensive records for study/data analysis integrity.
- Critically analyze complex data. Interpret and integrate experimental results with project objectives. Act as technical scientific lead for analysis and projects as applicable
- Initiate general change control process as required to maintain validated systems and assays
- Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve analysis techniques and improve protocols and processes. Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement
- Prepare technical reports, standard operating procedures, risk assessments, and perform fundamental literature searches to keep abreast of the field
- Prepare and present (internally and externally) scientific data, abstracts, papers, posters, etc., to advance the reputation of Life Science Services within the marketplace
- Responsible for assay/method/process validation ensuring assays/methods/processes are maintained in a validated state within area of expertise.
- Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures
- Train new hires and internal/external colleagues on various bioinformatics concepts, analysis procedures, open source/in-house developed applications, commercial software, and analysis platforms
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in a scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, etc.), with 1+ years of experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, information technologies, or computational sciences
- Master’s Degree in scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, etc.), with 3+ years of experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, information technologies, or computational sciences
- Bachelor's Degree in scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, etc.), with 5+ years of experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, information technologies, or computational sciences
- 2+ years using Python
- 1+ years using one of the following bioinformatics algorithms: BLAST, STAR, Bowtie2, MetaPhlAn, Kraken, MMseqs2, DIAMOND, and Minimap2
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in additional languages such as Perl or R
- Familiarity with supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, such as decision trees, support vector machines, and clustering methods
- Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch for building and training neural networks
- Experience developing reproducible bioinformatics workflows using containerization technologies and workflow managers such as Docker, Snakemake, Nextflow, Seven Bridges Genomics, Galaxy, CWL, and related tools
- Experience with sequencing technologies- specifically, Illumina and ONT Nanopore sequencing, and associated downstream analysis
- Experience with software version control, like Git and BitBucket.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud
- Experience working on multiple OS platforms, including Linux
- Working knowledge of GxP regulatory requirements
- Experience developing, validating, and implementing bioinformatics workflows
- Excellent time management skills (generation and adherence to timelines)
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple dynamic projects and priorities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills that have been demonstrated through presentations/seminars, implementation of new services, etc.
Pay Range for this position - $84,700 - $131,000
Our ranges are derived from several sources, and largely reliant on relevant industry market data. Should we decide to make an offer, we will consider several factors, including but not limited to your location, skills, experience, career level, and other job-related factors. This role may also be eligible for short-term or long-term incentive compensation, including, but not limited to, cash bonuses.
