Your role:


  • Problem Analysis and Project Management
    1. Identify data-driven/ML business opportunities
    2. Collaborate across the business to understand IT and business constraints
    3. Learn and master various big data systems/applications/methods at Merck, understand data from different systems, at different timescales and in complex formats to integrate and discover hidden relationships and provide useful actionable insights for business.
    4. Prioritize, scope, and manage data science projects and the corresponding key performance indicators (KPIs) for success
    5. Manage the AAP (advance analytic platform) applications with overseeing all the data sources, algorithms/model development.
    6. Understand business problems and design end-to-end data science use cases
    7. Delivering successful data science projects timely.
  • Data Collection and Integration
    1. Understand new data sources and process pipelines and catalog/document them
    2. Create data pipelines for more efficient and repeatable data science projects
    3. Keep exploring both internal and external data sources to understand, integrate and leverage them to solve business requirements.
  • Data Exploration and Preparation
    1. Apply EDA, statistical analysis and visualization techniques to various data
    2. Generate hypotheses about the underlying mechanics of the business process
    3. Test hypotheses using various quantitative methods
    4. Display drive and curiosity to understand the business process to its core
    5. Network with domain experts to better understand the business mechanics that generated the data
    6. Promote collaboration and knowledge exchange with other data science teams within and outside the organization
  • Machine Learning
    1. Apply various ML and advanced analytics techniques to perform classification or prediction tasks
    2. Integrate domain knowledge and available data into the ML solution, for example, from an understanding of financial risk, customer journey, quality prediction, sales, marketing
    3. Training or Finetuning pre-trained SOTA ML models based on the feedbacks and increasing datasets.
  • Operationalization
    1. Collaborate with internal and external data engineers, IT to evaluate and implement data science solutions deployment options
    2. integrate model performance management tools into the current business infrastructure
    3. Continuously monitor execution and health of ML models in production environment and develop optimized solutions for enhancement
    4. Establish best practices around ML production infrastructure
  • Other
    1. Train other business and IT staff on basic data science principles, cultures and techniques
    2. Train peers on specialist data science topics
    3. Network with internal and external partners
    4. Upskill yourself (through conferences, publications, courses, local academia and meetups).
    5. Understand company data lake and data assets available, utilize best practice from global community to enhance and enable country applications.


Who you are:

  • Advanced degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math, Quantitative social sciences, Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics or related field
  • 5+ years of deep technical experience in predictive analytics, machine learning, optimization, and fluent in the following technologies: Python, R, SQL, AWS, Tableau or other BI tools.
  • Very familiar with common data science and NLP toolkits in Python, such as: pandas, numpy, streamlit, scikit-learn, pytorch, tensorflow, spacy, Jieba, NLTK, and transformers.
  • Experienced about how to leverage available public, commercial and internal data resources and SOTA algorithms to provide insights to improve business efficiency
  • Proven track record in pharmaceutical, industrial, chemical, biotechnology business with statistical analysis and big data methodological services.
  • Expertise in modeling and simulation like: NLP models for NER and sentiment analysis, CF/deep learning models for personalized product recommendation, etc.
  • Strong intrinsic problem-solving skills, ability to structure and solve problems and conduct and interpret analysis independently, with demonstrated analytic and quantitative skills
  • Skills to communicate complex ideas effectively
  • Good written and oral English & Chinese skill
  • Passion to learn new technologies and business
  • Initiates and drives activities without guidance
  • First-hand experience of CRM system or customer data mining is prefered.
