Your Role:

A senior technical role within MSAT responsible for providing end-to-end technical support and scientific leadership for downstream — primarily chromatography, tangential flow filtration (TFF) and clarification — at manufacturing scale. The Lead BME will support customer site implementations, lead troubleshooting and process optimization, deliver training, and drive technical solutions for Merck’s bioprocess technologies in China.

Key Accountabilities:

• Provide on-site and remote technical support for manufacturing-scale chromatography, TFF and clarification operations, including implementation, troubleshooting and process optimization at customer facilities.
• Serve as the recognized scientific expert for chromatography and TFF; develop and deliver internal and external theoretical and hands-on training programs.
• Validate and confirm process sizing, process parameters, engineering estimates, design and technical reviews for customer projects.
• Perform reviews and audits of process sequences, SOPs, design parameters and operational protocols; lead root-cause investigations and field troubleshooting.
• Conduct in-house hydromechanics engineering studies and modelling using a rigorous scientific approach to support process design and scale-up.
•  Coordinate project activities, track technical milestones, and communicate project status and critical updates to stakeholders.
• Prepare and deliver technical seminars and training at customer sites and internally to grow technical capability across teams.
• Collaborate closely with China Process Solution colleagues (e.g., Sales, Customer Application teams) to drive successful process solutions and customer outcomes.
• Maintain and leverage connections with global MSAT and technical networks; adapt and implement global best practices for the China market.
• Proactively identify opportunities for technical improvements and professional development; work with your manager to drive personal and team growth.

Requirements/Qualification:

• Master’s degree or PhD in Biological/Biochemical sciences, Bioprocessing, Chemical/Biological Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Hands-on experience with GMP-compliant biomanufacturing processes — downstream and/or upstream — at pilot or commercial scale.
• Deep technical expertise in chromatography and tangential flow filtration (TFF); experience with clarification operations is preferred.
• Experience with scale-up, process sizing, parameter development and engineering design reviews.
• Familiarity with automation platforms and process control is preferred.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a practical engineering mindset.
• Excellent presentation, technical writing and interpersonal communication skills.
• Good command of English (oral and written); Mandarin proficiency for customer engagement in China.
• Willingness to travel frequently to customer sites.
