Your Role:

Reporting to the Head of LSBD, the Director of Business Development – China is a critical position in the LSBD group focused on supporting and advancing our company’s Life Science division through inorganic activities in China, emphasizing partner cultivation, partnerships, and licenses.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with extensive experience in Corporate/Business Development functions. They will naturally establish credibility, trust, and respect across the organization and externally, acting as a true thought partner while successfully navigating a global matrixed organization. The candidate must balance multiple priorities and work under tight timelines.

This position will be located in Shanghai, China, with travel, including international, up to 50% of the time.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Establish a strong network in APAC with a focus on China, leading cultivation activities and building a local deal funnel aligned with inorganic strategy.
  • Develop strong relationships with Life Science BD (LSBD) group functions and BU business partners to ensure alignment and clear visibility into all identified inorganic initiatives.
  • Apply robust strategy and financial frameworks (including DCFs) to drive prioritization and execution of inorganic areas of interest.
  • Build and maintain a target funnel for China Life Science opportunities in close collaboration with LSBD and partners to support and advance the Life Science inorganic roadmap.
  • Oversee the cultivation of near to long-term partnership/licensing targets; manage and nurture the funnel in close collaboration with and guidance from the Life Science BD team.
  • Lead/support end-to-end BD activities related to market assessment, target strategic fit analysis, business case development, negotiation, and deal terms/structures in close collaboration with Life Science BD team colleagues.
  • Become an integral part of the LSBD Team to drive inorganic growth both globally and in the region.

Who You Are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS with 7 or more years, MS degree with 6 or more years, or PhD with 5 or more years of relevant professional experience.
  • Significant exposure to roles in business/corporate development, M&A, partnerships, venture capital, and/or business/corporate strategy.
  • Experience in the healthcare or life science industry, with knowledge of Life Science tools, technologies, reagents, and hardware.
  • Strong local network in China and knowledge of the China BD landscape.
  • Experience leading cross-functional BD engagements from ideation/inception through relationship cultivation and deal signing.
  • Strong understanding of financial modeling and strategy concepts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, matrixed environment with cultural adaptability; high energy and motivation while navigating ambiguity.
  • Excellent relationship, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to influence at the leadership level across a matrixed organization while driving projects.
  • Highly collaborative within the team, with stakeholders, and potential partners.
  • Exceptional project management skills, having managed and successfully completed diverse projects on time and with multiple global stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in life sciences/biopharmaceuticals.
  • Direct experience leading strategy and/or deal execution in the Life Sciences.
  • Direct experience identifying and evaluating inorganic opportunities and providing guidance within the Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical, or Biotech markets.
  • Master’s Degree in a Scientific or Business discipline.
