Your role:
We are seeking a (Senior) Scientific Applications Engineer to join our Scientific Computing team. You will be responsible for managing and optimizing our high-performance computing application stack, enabling scientific simulations and computational research across R&D. In your role as a (Senior) Scientific Applications Engineer, you will manage and deploy scientific software packages such as ORCA, VASP, Gromacs, LAMMPS, Alphafold, RFDiffusion, EDEM, and STAR-CCM+. You will be responsible for performance optimization and benchmarking of scientific applications, as well as developing automation tools for software deployment and management. License management for commercial software packages will also be part of your responsibilities. Collaborating with computational scientists to improve their workflows is essential, and you will provide expert guidance and training on HPC best practices. Additionally, you will contribute to architectural decisions for our scientific computing infrastructure.
Scientific Computing is part of our Digital Chemistry organization within the Group Science and Technology Office. Our team leads oneHPC, a strategic initiative to modernize the high-performance computing environment at our company. This project consolidates and unifies our HPC infrastructure to accelerate scientific breakthroughs in drug discovery, materials science, and advanced machine learning applications. As part of the Group Digital Innovation department, our team takes a user-centric approach to building and operating this next-generation computing platform that will empower researchers and scientists across Life Science, Healthcare, and Electronics businesses. This position will be based in either Boston (USA), or Darmstadt in the Rhine-Main area (Germany).
Who you are:
- Degree in Computational Science (e.g., Computational Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Medicine), optional: PhD in a computational science field
- Professional experience with HPC environments and scientific computing applications; experience with cloud computing platforms, particularly AWS is a plus
- Strong expertise in software deployment tools (Easybuild or Spack) and application performance optimization
- Proven experience with high-performance interconnects and computing architectures
- Strong scripting and programming skills (Python, Bash)
- Proficiency with HPC workload managers (e.g. Slurm, Kubernetes)
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and expertise in containerization technologies is a plus
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an international environment
- Experience providing technical training and user support
