Why I joined Inhouse Consulting: A Global Journey Beyond Consultancy

My global journey: Germany, US, Malaysia, and China!

I had never imagined that I would move across three continents and travel to over ten local offices within my three-year Inhouse Consulting (IC) journey.

After graduation at the University of Mannheim in Germany, I moved to Darmstadt to be part of our Inhouse Consulting Global Graduate Program (IC-GGP). In my first year at IC, I got the chance to work in both IC offices in Germany and US, engaging in global consulting projects on Healthcare and Life Science sectors.  The first year offered me the chance to work across topics like strategy design, market entry, process optimization and project management, with rich multinational experience e.g. client workshop in Mumbai, site visit in Switzerland, stakeholder interview in Japan etc.  My second year at IC-GGP provided freedom on rotations, one of which could be international. With two pieces of luggage from Boston, I relocated to Kuala Lumpur working with the Malaysia leadership team to develop a five-year strategy for the Healthcare business. Afterwards, I finished another two rotations in Germany on the topics of Life Science strategy and Healthcare governmental affairs.

When it comes to the third year, my luggage was very excited to welcome its next destination: China! I have joined as a consultant for the newly established IC-APAC offices in Shanghai. IC provides opportunities for consultants and graduates to easily exchange in different offices and involve in various business topics.

My career path: intern…graduate…consultant

My story with Inhouse Consulting started from my internship in 2015.  Before that, I had already several internships across four different industries.

What was attracting me to join IC after graduation? People, people, and it is always people.

IC is like a “small UN of Consultancy” with consultants from various consulting firms, so that we can learn from each other on different consulting approaches and working style at one place! The team has highly diversified background with interesting life stories: You can come across with someone who holds a PhD in Biology with a degree in literature and worked for army, consultancy and industry; or someone whose career moves from a gymnast, to a pharmacist and lands in consulting.

Furthermore, as a consultant with pure Business education background, I am very glad to have opportunities to work with scientists and engineers to solve the business problem in pharmaceutical and chemical industry. You can also find another interesting article from my colleague Juergen about his experience in interacting with the science world.

All in all, fruitful exposure, insightful interaction and systematic training in IC enables me to grow from an intern to a global consultant, to better help business tackle challenges and drive growth.

My days in China: vibrant, dynamic, agile

Since I relocated from Germany to China, I continuously got the question: How do you find Shanghai? How is the life in China? VIBRANT - it is my answer:” Every day is a new page.” With dynamic changes, we need to closely work with the business to agilely strategize and adapt to leverage transformational growth and opportunity in China, especially in the area of innovation and digitalization. We also provide methodology and skillset to China teams to translate strategy into realization, bridge the dots with similar projects from other regions, and enabler local team in long-term strategic thinking.  On the other hand, IC-APAC team is newly established with strong start-up spirits, intensive connection with Global, and streamlined integration into local business. It is fascinating to work in an environment with heritage of 350-year company as well as dynamics of a start-up phase team in China.

Inhouse Consulting, is providing me a unique opportunity to connect people and business globally in the world of science and technology.
