Role and Responsibilities:

As a Linux Subject Matter Expert at Merck, your primary responsibility will be to manage operations, design, and build the Linux/Unix infrastructure. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the stability, security, and performance of the Linux environment. Your key tasks will include:

  • Incident/Change/Problem Management: Utilizing your ITIL knowledge and experience in incident, change, and problem management to effectively handle and resolve Linux-related issues and provide timely solutions.
  • Patching and Vulnerability Management: Implementing and maintaining a comprehensive patch management system and fixing security vulnerabilities in the Linux/Unix environment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Designing and implementing high availability solutions using technologies such as pacemaker. You will be responsible for ensuring the availability and resilience of the Linux infrastructure.
  • Virtualization Management: Familiarity with different virtualization engines like VMware and KVM and leveraging them to optimize resources and improve scalability.
  • Configuration Management: Working with tools such as SUSE Manager, Red Hat Satellite, LDAP, Samba, DNS, and mail server configuration to manage and maintain the Linux environment efficiently.
  • Project Management: Handling multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, collaborating with complex and international remote teams, and ensuring successful project execution within timelines.
  • Shift Work: Working in a rotational shift environment, to provide continuous support and maintain service availability. Three shifts between 6am to 10.30am.
  • Hybrid Working Model: Adapting to a hybrid work model that includes both remote and on-site work at the base location in Bangalore.

Skills Required: 

  • 7 + years of experience with strong expertise in SUSE Linux and/or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and experience with AIX, which will be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing high availability solutions using technologies like pacemaker and PowerHA.
  • Familiarity with virtualization engines such as VMware and KVM.
  • Experience working with configuration management tools like SUSE Manager, Red Hat Satellite, LDAP, Samba, DNS, and mail server configuration.
  • Experience with any scripting language (Bash, Shell) and automation platforms like Salt stack / Ansible/ python is highly desired.
  • Ability to work effectively in complex and global remote teams and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
