Position Summary:
We are seeking a motivated Operational Excellence Specialist to lead and promote operational excellence activities at our Ichikawa Distribution Center in Japan. This role requires a passionate individual dedicated to driving continuous improvement and enhancing operational efficiency at the Gemba (shop floor) level within a dynamic supply chain environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Drive the realization of annual cost-saving objectives through physical process improvements, digital transformation projects, and duty-saving initiatives.
• Foster and promote a culture of continuous improvement at the distribution center, with active support and guidance from senior management.
  • Develop and execute an annual Operational Excellence (OpEx) plan aligned with Japan site managers and APAC OpEx leadership.
  • Take ownership in driving the achievement of annual OpEx cost-saving targets across all distribution functions.
  • Utilize Lean, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies to identify improvement opportunities and implement effective solutions.
• Lead and support operational excellence and Gemba Kaizen initiatives to improve process efficiency, quality, and safety. Facilitate and coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly OpEx activities such as DMS, Kaizen events, Gemba Walks, 6S, Visual Management, and others.
  • Demonstrate a hands-on approach in the first six months to build strong relationships with Ichikawa operations associates. Willingness to “get hands dirty” in Gemba.
  • Identify and eliminate waste (Muda) within operational processes at Ichikawa DC, leading Kaizen projects collaboratively with operation leaders. Serve as a Kaizen role model within Ichikawa DC.
  • Promote and support deployment of small-scale Gemba Kaizen initiatives throughout the distribution centers.
• Collaborate closely with the APAC OpEx team to align on shared goals and objectives. Participate in weekly and monthly APAC Operational Excellence meetings to report progress, share insights, and gain support.
  • Provide timely progress updates, including weekly highlights, monthly OpEx presentations, and OpEx scorecard updates.
  • Actively share best practices from Japan and adopt relevant APAC learnings to continuously improve local operations.
• Support Merck’s leadership principles by fostering teamwork, demonstrating integrity, and encouraging innovation within the operational teams.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

• 3 to 5 years of proven experience in process improvement within the warehouse operations.
• Strong expertise in Lean methodologies, particularly Lean tools focused on waste reduction, root cause analysis (RCA), and Kaizen.
  • Note: Assume to complete Six Sigma Green Belt certification project within one year, after taking the training in Japan or outside of Japan.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions in both domestic and international contexts.
• Native or business-level proficiency in Japanese. Business-level proficiency in English is required to effectively communicate within global teams.
