CONTEXT

The importance of protein biochemistry in the global life science industry has grown significantly in the past 10 years. Production of bioactive and structural proteins for the healthcare industry, academia and applied segments play an increasingly important and impactful role in Merck’s business operations. Strong Biochemical background together with high performance abilities has become a necessity in today's operation of the protein purification department.

 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Proteins biochemist is responsible for proteins purification from natural sources such as plant and mammalian tissues as well as fermentation sources (bacteria and yeast).

The employee operates downstream-process equipment (chromatography columns, Ultra-Filtration, dialysis, etc.)

tests the sample of the in-process and final product (protein content, purity, activity) to ensure quantity and quality and employee analyzes and document the test results. In addition the chemist performs trouble shooting to solve for process difficulties and reviews and corrects all documentation related to the production process.

 

 

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Extraction/purification of proteins from microbial fermentations and other natural sources.
  • Preparation of solutions in large quantities.
  • Operation of industrial chromatography methods (Gel-filtration, Ion-exchange, Affinity) using FPLC.
  • Operation of analytical equipment: SDS-PAGE, spectrophotometer, etc.
  • Performing all activities during the production processes in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Carrying out process improvement, scale-up and implementation of new technologies.
  • Writing and reviewing protocols and all necessary documents according to compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION/LANGUAGES

 

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Process Engineering.
  • Fluent in English.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in laboratory work.
  • Experience with analytical methods (SDS-PAGE, Lowry, Bradford, Biuret, enzymology(.
  • Experience with sterile work – advantage.
  • Experience in purification of proteins – advantage.
